Were they leaving their nest just as you caught them? If so, they aren't mated.

In his signature it says he has been keeping ants for 11yrs so I'm sure he caught them away from the nest lol. Plus I've seen this guys Yellow Crazy ant colony (pictures on here ) and wow, its huge.

Of cos they are mated, no wings ,see?
They like to swarm together after the mating flight, so you just need to find the spot and could catch a lot of them.
