Would a toothpick be a good alternative?
If you can prevent the honey from dripping onto the glass bottom, yes. Q-tips work, too.

I've just bought some prekilled crickets for the future, but I'll use honey while I'm gone.
As long as they're not dry they'll be okay. Ants don't like dried insects, they're mainly interested in their body fluids.
Also adult ants barely need any protein, it's the larvae that do.

Well, you can always freeze them. And if you take them out put them into water for a few minute before giving them to the ants.

Yo definitely won't get workers in 10 days if they are eggs. No need to worry
