Poligyinous Lasius niger colony?

Hey every one I caught a wild Lasius niger colony the other day with a queen as well as 2 virgin queens that I put in with the colony. They rejected 1 and when they moved into their setup I found 4 live queens and 2 dead ones as well as the rejected one in a test tube setup.
Can someone please help explain why this occurred.

There aren't any Lasius in South Africa.

Oh, this is a pest control website. They don't want to identify your ants; they just want you to pay to have them removed. Notice that they used the same picture for Ochetellus as they did for Lasius niger, while the queen in the image is actually a Messor sp.
