Digging up a colony

I live in Canada, and I was wondering how you would safely dig up a wild ant colony. The AntsCanada page itself touches on it a small bit, but I don't know how you would dig up the whole colony without missing or injuring/kill some ants or possibly the queen.

Yeaah, this is a bad idea. Ant colonies should be started by foundress queens.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.
