Hydration Question

My cotton balls go flat when wet, and does not touch the bottom of the nest.
Im wondering if this is still effective?

Must the hydration medium (ie wet cotton balls) touch the bottom of the nest?
Or is it ok to leave an "air gap" between the wet cotton balls and the nest?

How does water get into the nest?
Is it through condensation?

The cotton does not need to touch the bottom of the nest, as it is solely for humidity and not hydration for the ants. You will still need to provide them a source of fresh drinking water, via test-tube or other method.
