water feeder build tutoial

so if you would like to make tiny little liquid feeders for cheap, here is how i did it. they can be used for just about any liquid food source, as long as its not too viscous. i use mine for water and sugar water.
1) for starters i used these little (half ounce i believe) paint containers i found at micheals.
Image
2) then you will need a drill bit around 5/64 or so. drill a hole in the top side of the container, right below where the bottom of the lid sits when closed.
Image
3) when you are through the plastic and have a hole, tip the drill bit at an angle so you get a hole pointing down.
Image
4) after that, grab some screen (make sure it is not bare metal screen or it ill rust), and cut it into a square about the size of your thumb nail.

5) next take some aquarium grade silicone, and dab small drops around the outer most part of the square.
Image
6) gently place the screen inside the container, centered over the hole.
Image
7) wait for it to dry as per instructions for silicone. then rinse it out, fill with water, put cap on and flip over.
Image
8) last and final step, put feeder in outworld near the cooler area, and watch your lil gals discover it then start to use it.

hope this is useful to everyone. :D

-a buddy of mine way back when, showed me how to make bigger versions of these for roaches, and other insect feeders for the zoo we worked for. im pretty sure ive seen other versions in photos of others ants as well.
- the top is on the bottom because the lids are not completely air tight. if it is right side up, with the hole on the bottom base, and the lid up top.... then you lose the suction that is keeping the water from running out. its kinda like a gas can, it pours better if you open the little hole above the big one. except in this case you are trying to do the opposite. :D

hummingbird feeders use these same principles too. also, almost all beekeepers use some version of these scaled up. ;)

Great Idea! I will be using this! This must be so much easier than test tube feeders! :D
