Depends on what you are looking for. For wood ants looks behind loose bark on trees or stumps. I normally use the fire dept parking lot at dusk the lights draw them.

Almost anywhere just keep looking I found all my queens within 20 ft of my house, look under rocks, wood, leaves that have matted flat. Wood ants fly at night turn on a porch light sit around and wait you might be surprised what you find.
