Best Beginner Nest Type

I am not sure whar nest style to go with. I really really love the look of terariums like the Hacienda del Derado, but I feel, as this is my first colony, that I do not have the experience for something like that. Should I go with that or with an artificial nest for my Campanautus colony?
Colonies:
--Tetramorium Caespitum
--Camponotus pennsylvanicus
--Formica Sp.

That really all depends on personal preference. You have to ask yourself if you want to see all the action as in seeing the eggs and larvae and the queen laying eggs and so on. The action that takes place inside the nest. Or do you want it to look more natural like it does outside. It's all up to you in the end but being as this is your first colony I would go with something artificial where you can see what's going on. It's a really cool experience seeing your colony grow. You could also still have a very naturalistic set up and be able to see it all. Having a natural setup and naturalistic setup are two different things LOL. Just keep that in mind
Keeping:
Camponotus subbarbatus
Formica pallidefulva x2
Formica subsericea x4
Lasius sp
Tetramorium immigrans x2
Dorymyrmex bureni

Founding:
Formica pallidefulva
Unknown sp x2

A terrarium formicarium functions as both.

They are actually cheaper, as aquariums don't require you to pay large sums of money for a formicarium. They work for everything from a queen to mature colony. Plants, rocks, and sticks can be added to give the soil strength.

There are other, cheaper options for formicaria other than AntsCanada, but I won't post them here because of forum rules. If you are interested, PM me.

Hello there,
I've only ever had one setup and that's my Omninest Vertical Small from the AntsCanada Shop. It gives me clear views of everything.

Seriously though, the Hacienda del Derado is beautiful, but you don't get fine control over conditions in the nest and the ability to really closely monitor your queen.

Do yourself a favor and grab a Vertical.
You'll thank yourself in a year.
Nests:
Messor barbarus - 1 Year, population: ~150 (27/05/2017)

If the nests are out of your price range then maybe you can get a little creative and make your own
