Re: Dead queen, questions

I'm not sure I'm a whole bunch of help here but I'll give it my best... I recently caught a tetramorium queen that was, or seemed barely alive. I've had her for probably 3 or 4 days now and I keep checking on her. I put some honey in her test tube setup to see if that would perk her up but she hasn...

Dead queen, questions

Alright so I've had a Veromessor Pergandei queen since around April. She reared two workers and everything was going good. I ended up moving them to a founding formicarium because they were running out of water quickly. Let them move themselves into the nest and brought a small clutch of brood with ...

Re: Odd black residue ! (poop? Why there?)

It could very well be poop but pictures would definitely help to identify. But yes, based your description it sound like poop. As to why they put it there, they may need more space, so the only place they can put it far away enough from the colony is there. I figured it was probably poop. I just th...

Odd black residue ! (poop? Why there?)

Okay, In my Veromessor Pergandei's setup I have her and her workers in a test test with a portal connected with a sugar and honey water tube. After a day or two there's trash moved into the test tube and portal with an odd black residue on the cotton of the sugar water test tube. I'd imagine if it w...

Re: Wingless Fruit Flies as Ant Food

Ok cool, thanks. I'll make sure I get a culture of them then. Hello, saw this thread a bit ago and decided to wait to comment until I've fed my ants fruit flys. I just got my D. Hydei Flightless fruit flys from petco and I've given my Veromessor queen and her workers two or three now and they've be...

Re: Newbie in ant keeping

hello everyone, I am just getting into ant keeping and have watched almost every video out there on ants. I have lots of the stuff you need for ant keeping to (Formicarium, out world, test tubes, Ext.) Now all I need is a queen and I have dedicated a lot of my time to trying to find a queen ant. Ev...

Re: Wingless Fruit Flies as Ant Food

Yeah, I actually think the people who give pieces of insect with hard exoskeletons to young colonies are doing them a disservice. Drosophila can be chewed into oblivion, even by the smaller ants. Young colonies may not always clean up after themselves properly, so whatever's left from that uneaten ...

Re: Ant Carbs?

Ok what my ants (Solenopsis) like and I feed them is crickets, sugar water, and it may sound funny but the white kitkat mini's. LOL I'll give them one of those and they will eat the white chocolate and the wafers too, kinda funny watching them tunnel thru it. So they get their proteins, sugars, and...

Re: Ant Carbs?

Carbohydrates are a group of organic compounds that, when oxidized, will produce carbon dioxide and water. Glucose is one of the most useful energy sources for the body, although fatty acids can also be used. A chip, for example, has carbohydrates in the form of starch (how plants store glucose), c...
