Do yourself a favor and use firebrick. It is softer then aac by a tiny bit and is found in places where people do clay work, kiln stores and such. Workers are about two or three millimeters, I'm not sure how big compared to fire ants because I have never seen them. As for rain, it honestly doesn't matter. Unlike other ants, P. Imparis seems to fly based solely on temperature, so rain isn't a factor.

I just found a camponotus colony across the street. They are yellow and black, can't wait till the fly!!! Also, when did you plan to take these out of hibernation?
