Hibernation occurs while just being in the cold. Your queen is doing what she is supposed to be doing.

You can assume a queen that has an apparent retinue of workers has already established a colony, and you should capture as much of it as possible (if your really have to). If she actually is a new queen, then she is off to a good start. If she is an old queen by herself, she dies. If she is a new qu...

These look like Prenolepis workers, but the pictures are not clear.
Don't add workers to a parasitic queen if you aren't sure what they are!

Can't tell from this angle. Pictures of the underside are generally worthless (although if this were lit up, we could at least see the maxilarry palps).

Was the water put in there? The humidity from the wet cotton bung in a test tube setup is all a queen needs. It looks like she might have drowned.

You always capture established queens with their workers. She might not be able to rear new ones by herself.
