Videos aren't very useful for identification. With the Formica, it will be best to wait until workers. The details to look for are the number of gastral segments with silvery pubescence on them and the length of the antennal scapes in relation to the head (this is much harder to do with queens). She...

Unfertilized (not the same as infertile) eggs produce male alates.

I think the responsible thing to do would be to let her go. She should be alright on her own as long as she gets a snack before she leaves. Her goal is to chase away a young Formica colony and steal some of their brood (they are equipped with enlarged Dufour's gland which releases panic-inducing odo...

Polygyny is not as consistent as some people think. There are some species which are regularly polygynous, but many others will only be polygynous if they have the genes for it. Polygyny is advantageous when there are lots of members of the same species nearby (getting a few more workers faster help...
