Re: Bay Area (north California) - California
Hi there! I have a healthy happy colony of several hundred tetramorium ants. They are a fun species to keep! Feel free to ask me any and all questions about tetramorium! So, last year I found a bunch of tetramorium queens. I decided to experiment. I had a couple queens by themselves in separate tube...

Re: False Honeypot Ants/Queen Care. (Prenolepis imparis)
You can move them from there test tube when they have at least 10 workers. So I thought I'd let you know that 10 workers is a very low number. It's quite dangerous to move a colony of that size into a nest. It's actually recommended that 25 be the minimum. 25-50 is a safe range to introduce a young...

Re: Prenolepis imparis
Ok, so number one, 10 workers is a very low number to introduce to a nest. With such low numbers, your colony would have a lower survival chance if moved into a nest. Most people suggest 25-50 workers. If your worried about overcrowding, get a bigger tube, and fill it with less water. Number two, Do...

Re: Queen Ant ID in PA, USA
looks like neoniger. This species often will not lay until after winter. They usually don't fly till September so... maybe she will lay before winter. I have raised two colonies of neonigers. So definitely don't throw her out if she doesn't lay.

Re: Bark formicarium??
I have heard that things like bark and cork make great formicariums for Camponotus since that is usually where they tend to make their nests in the wild. I have heard also that hydration is great since the wood sucks up the moister, but you need to be careful not to overwater it in the same area be...

Re: ooper's Tetramorium sp. E colony -- not Monomorium minimum (#6)
I thought I would journal one of my Monomorium minimum colonies. These ants are quite small (2mm in length), so I designed a Hybrid nest just for them with narrow and shallow passages and chambers. The shallowness of the passages and chambers allow for better viewing of these smaller ants as it put...

Bark formicarium??
SO, I was looking at pictures of formicaria, And I thought I'd ask you guys about bark formicaria. The pictures look really cool, I was just wondering about hydration, and how to clean the bark to make sure it's safe.
