It's one of the most commonly kept genera in North America next to Lasius, Solenopsis, and Camponotus. You could probably find some journals.

I think the measurements are fine. It looks like a dolichoderine species, like Tapinoma. I really do not agree that the queen is 8mm - she looks like 6mm from the image, so are the workers smaller too? Ohh! I get it. Ants are measured from head to gaster. The antennae and/or wings are not included.

Formica obscuripes is a species that likes to reproduce by budding or social parasitism. They stopped having their nuptial flights last month, sadly. There will be similar Formica flying in July.
