Definitely Camponotus, maybe discolor. I'm keeping some right now that look exactly like that, plus I have 4 years experience with these purty girls.If you want I can get a photo of mine when I get home for you to compare.

Brachmyrmex patagonicus I would say at a substantial amount of workers(at least 600ish), yes. Other species I don't know well enough to give a good enough answer.

It a bit late but I often see P.denata nesting in rotting logs. I would guess they like a fair amount of humidity. Not swampy but not deserty either. Good luck!
