Thank you both of you.
I thought also Formica sp. which I recently caught a winged one, but this time the color looks more brownish and slightly bigger.

ID Please, Wheaton Illinois

I've caught a brown queen at sidewalk & grass in a college campus, Wheaton, Illinois.
The size is approximately 1.2cm.
I have not still figured out the best way to embed pictures in the forum.
So please bare with me to post them in google photo.

Re: How do ants find their way back home?

I don't think it is as simple as that. Following pheromone trail is one of their many strategies. Some ants (desert ants) remembered their steps to feel how far they are away from home. Pheromone may be quickly evaporated in desert environment so that they cannot rely on solely pheromone trails. Som...

How do ants find their way back home?

I am wondering how ants find their way home after finding food.
Do they reverse travel exactly the way they get to the food or do they make a shortest path to the nest?
Anyone can comment?

Experiment Idea

I wonder if some well made formicariums can attract wild ant colonies so that they abandon their existing natural sancta and move to the human made formicariums. This can be multi million dollar business.

Nanitics life expectancy?

Does anyone know nanitics life expectancy in general?
Of course, it varies by species. Let's say Camponotus pennsylvanicus?
Do they liver shorter than general workers?
