The opening for the heat cable in the Hybrid nest is 9mm diameter. I'm not familiar with any heat cables but the Zoo Med ones. The little bulbous end on the one shown here is about 7mm and fits easily into the opening in the Hybrid.Mistymoore wrote:What is the size of heating cable fits into the hybrid nest small

Re: How much Watt
Yes it worked. It created a temperature gradient in my Hybrid nest so the portion of the nest near the heat source was warmer than other areas. The ants would position the larvae up against the wall where the heat cable was. Now I don't know if a higher wattage would have been better or not, since I...

Re: Vertical nest or standard?
The ability to restrict levels is a really nice feature of the vertical. You can expand it as the colony grows. I have used cotton to restrict rooms of the Omni nest, but it is not as convenient. Both are great products and would work well for Formica or Campo.

Re: Is this a Queen or not?
The first one with wings is definitely a queen. Not sure of the species. The second one is not a queen. You can tell by the size of the thorax usually.
You may need to get the help of someone from your area of the world to help identify the species. Good luck!

Re: How do you switch test tube setup?
Another nice option is to use an AntsCanada Test Tube portal - http://www.AntsCanada.com/shop/ac-test-tube-portal/ . Just attach a new water-filled test tube and the ants will eventually find it and move in when their current test tube runs dry. Another benefit of the Test Tube portal is that it can...

Re: Sand as a hydration medium
You may want to consider cutting a hole large enough for a test tube to be attached to a side, then attach a water-filled test tube to it. This can provide water to the ants in case whatever hydration system you try out does not offer them enough water.

Re: Omni nest vertical part identification
I think you are going to have to post a picture of the part. Maybe put a ruler next to it so we get an idea of its size.
