My ides is diet. Dog food, processed granola bars... I doubt that would be their natural diet. Perhaps it is some chemical that is added to some food...

Re: What other pets do you guys have?
Mantises are really easy to keep, and extremely low maintainence. Spiny flower mantises in particular, are very pretty, and very cool. I have an adult female. I am hoping on breeding them soon. They also don't need very large cages.

Lasius Niger will lay eggs, and develop their first workers before hibernation. Unlike Lasius neoniger.

Don't substitute auger water for water in a test tube. It will make it moldy. Plus, she sometimes just needs water.

Cool, I also live in south dakota! I like to hibernate them earlier, so they can wake up in like December, and get an early start to the year.

Perhaps some chemicals in the formicarium killed them... Did you use any silicone or anything?

Re: Parasite Queen?
Or Lasius neoniger. Very interesting behavior. Are you sure she wasn't the original founding queen?

Re: Parasite Queen?
That is not a parasitic queen. Looks like possibly Lasius alenius.
