‘Lasius’ will milk a variety of aphids, scale bugs, meally bugs, and more. You can attempt to introduce them into your vivarium, but there is no guarantee they will actually farm them.

A coffee filter should work depending on the species of ant. But, if that is your only barrier, you will likely run into issues as the colony gets larger and you need to get in there more often.

You can probably find dirt mixtures at your local hardware store. Not sure if you can find too much in England this time of year, but almost any dirt/sand mixture should work. Just experiment and make sure that it is firm enough to hold their tunnels!

I lived in Jasper, MN for a while, and now live in Sioux Falls, SD however. You can start to expect Prenolepis imparis and Camponotus SP.
