Re: Alberta nuptial flights

Myrmica Sp. (Im assuming Rubra) Have 100% been flying in Calgary (Bridle wood area) this week. I saw the flights live in action on Sept 6th. The past few days I've caught about 15 queens. I'm trying to found the colony's a few different ways. I have dual queens, 4 queens and a 3 queen set up. Also ...

It's only certain species such as lasius nenoniger (which fly in september) that wait until after hibernation to lay.
Lasius neoniger actually can lay eggs prior to hibernation if they fly earlier. Their flights aren’t specific to September only.

Re: Semi Claustral Queens, help

Not polygamous, but polygynous. Even so, they sometimes will fight. Myrmica can not be identified to the species with close examination. Actually, some Myrmica can be ID easily without close exmination like Myrmica Rubra . Myrmica rubra is the exception. I was pertaining to other species in the gen...

Re: Semi Claustral Queens, help

Not polygamous, but polygynous. Even so, they sometimes will fight. Myrmica can not be identified to the species with close examination. Semi-claustral queens are fairly easy to care for. It’s a common misconception that they’re difficult. All my semi-claustral queens I’ve caught so far have reared ...

Re: Queen ant stubborn

Will the queen spawn eggs if I don't collect the workers with her? If the queen has already established a colony you must collect some of her workers. If she’s fully claustral she won’t have the necessary nutrients she once did in order to fast for the length of time she did when she raised her fir...

Re: Should I add workers in with caught queen?

I caught a lasius (not a parasite)queen about 4 days ago. There were two queens in roughly the same area. I was wanting with my nephew who couldn't wait and kept overturning g rocks before I could look. I caught the two queens but I don't know who is who. There were a few workers near each queen wh...

Re: Another recent taxonomic change

I know I already wrote about this but no one seemed to have read so I'm writing about it again. As many of you might know Formica Fusca is NOT found in North America. The once believed Formica Fusca of North America is actually not related to the Formica Fusca in other parts of the world. A friend (...

Re: New BC ant lover curious about permits and rules

I am brand new to this, I've been trying to find laws and regulations for ants and bug catching.. the only ones I can find are for import of ants (72 species apparently legal to import), and the general list of CAS animals which contains zero insects and thus apparently even keeping the invasive my...

Re: I would appreciate some help identifying this ant.

Hi ant friends, I'm new to the ant keeping hobby. In July, I found this ant queen and put her in a test tube setup. Now she has a bunch of eggs. She is about 10mm long. I would be grateful if I could get an identification. Thanks for your help and greetings from Switzerland. http://i1266.photobucke...
