Hey,
Sorry for the late response. I haven't been keeping up with the forums at all. I now live in Renton just south of The Landing. I work in Bellevue. Looking forward to searching for some Camponotus here though I don't even know where to start haha.

Re: Ants Not Moving
Just cover them up and leave them be. When My colony was connected to a test tube portal, they hardly ever came out. I believe its fear since they are a small group. Eventually i saw them get more courage to explore on their own. I think its just cause its a small colony cause mine were the same way...

Re: 15W Heat Cable Touching other Cords
If its the same 15w cable I'm using (Zoo Med), the first 6 ft of the cable from the Plug should not be heated so you have some slack before the cable gets hot. The one I have is 11.5 ft total, so the first 6 of mine is laying across other cables and it should have a small mark on the cable as to whe...

Re: How do you prepare ant food?
Everyone else already said it but yup, Freezing works best. For new colonies, if you freeze a cricket, the legs pretty much snap right off and you can use those very easily. I also cut a small piece of aluminum foil to to put the food on and slide it into the test tubes using tweezers. It makes for ...

Re: What do I need to start off?
I started July of this year and during that time, I'd say just test tubes and cotton first. It took me quite some time to catch my first queen, so anything else you buy wouldn't be used for quite some time. Just start off with 10-20 Test tubes. You can them super cheap online, and some cotton. Even ...

Re: Best ways to image?
I am using an Iphone 7 Plus and got this Macro Lens on Amazon and its perfect for real detailed close up shots. Originally it was $19.99 but went up a few bucks.

Re: Do my ants need more space?
I believe what the ants are doing by putting waste on the honey is due to natural instincts to hide their findings. When Ants find food, they either try to bring it back to their nest or cover it up to hide it with debris. My ants do this with grains of sand from their setup. As far as space, they w...

Anyone in Washington (Tacoma/Silverdale/Seattle/Bellevue)
Hey just checking to see if there are any members in Washington? Specifically the Tacoma / Silverdale / Seattle / Bellevue / Kent / Renton areas?
I'm moving to Washington this week and can't wait to see what ants I find here. Hoping to catch my first large species!

Re: Upright Sand Nest w/ Outworld
So, I haven't built a standing ant nest but I have used sand in my test tubes, formicarium, and out worlds. Some issues that I think would definitely expect: 1) Sand doesn't hold water as well as soil. I have to hydrate the sand I use far more often than soil due to the higher evaporation rate of t...
