First eggs up to first formicarium.

I can expect them between 1-2 weeks, correct? I have a Formica podzolica queen, caught on July 24th, yet to lay eggs. Not worried or anything more just wanting to talk about her and her care in the near future. Since I'm on a tight budget and uncertain whether or not I will have the funds to purchas...

Tapinoma sessile in Kamloops BC

Tapinomas flew 4 days ago but I missed them, noticed some drowned queens in a cup of water my son left outside but I was unable to find any still milling about. I've got my eyes peeled for any other neighbourhood colonies taking to the air but with all the damn smoke from these wildfires I've been c...

Re: How to release a colony?

Myrmecologists tell us not to release captive ant colonies for risk of spreading illnesses they may have picked up under our care. This policy is based off of problems other pet keepers have caused. You could try to give/sell them to another person. You'd think they'd pick up more diseases in the w...

Yes don't worry we are all impatient, just got to overcome it, and yes they don't do much else, formica will probably take between 1-3 months.
Is this applicable for all Formica sp.?

Wondering because I have a Formica podzolica queen at the moment. First timer heh

Re: How to release a colony?

Yeah, I suppose that is how I will have to do it. I would really like to release them in a park, but seeing how it probably takes several hours that wouldn't work. Release them next to a large rock or something in your yard, and you can continue to observe them into the future. I think it would be ...

Re: Non ant related id!

Yes actually I do! They're a predatory insect called an ambush bug, Phymantinae , a subspecies of assassin bugs. Pretty neat little critters, and damn strong for their size. In the course of finding this out I've come to learn that this type of foreleg appendage is called a raptorial arm, and is an ...

A local beekeeper took much better photos of these fellas than I did.

Re: Disturbing claustral queens

Just an update, this queen didnt make it. I dont think I'll be taking any claustral queens out of their chambers if I find then in the yard again.

This think was hanging off an earwig in my plum tree out back neck deep in 'em with his probiscous. Looks like a yellow/green stinkbug but had a mantis head and forelegs. One of the coolest bugs I've ever seen.

Re: Tapinoma sessile queen???

Google search my friend, and a little background on each image I click on so I'm know I'm getting what I think I'm looking at, or at least can convince myself I am. In this instance, this photo here is basically exactly what I have stashed away in a drawer in the corner of my house in a test tube: h...
