Hi all,

I have an I. purpureus queen with a small batch of brood. Do I wait until she has workers before I feed her or can I feed her now?
So, I'm pretty sure those guys are claustral, meaning you'll need to wait until about a week after the workers arrive before you can give them any food.

Ants Australia Nest Size?

I've founded a colony of lasius niger recently, and when my colony fills out the test tube, I wanted to put them in an AA nest. I just wasn't sure which one to buy. There'd probably be about 50 or so workers. Which one shall I buy?
Thanks, ANTphibian

The most humane way to kill feeders

I only have 1 ant colony, which is currently just a queen and some brood, but I am in possession of a fruit fly culture. I was just wondering, are there any types of ways that I could kill a fruit fly for feeding painlessly? Basically, what is the most human way that I can kill my feeders? (btw, sor...

Re: Queen not taking care of eggs

I'm sorry to tell you this, but first of all just because a queen lost her wings that doesn't mean she's fertile. Also, the fact that a queen has eggs scattered around and isn't taking care of them is a very definite sign that the queen is infertile. If those eggs turn into pupae and then hatch, th...

I keep my ants in the garage and it's my first year, will they be ok in the winter because I live in a temperate region and I don't want them to die!
I was going to ask the same thing. I don't want my ants to freeze whilst hibernating.

Queen not taking care of eggs

So, I checked on my lasius niger queen this morning. She has been in her test tube for about a month and a half, but doesn't have wings, so I am assuming she has mated. The problem is, she seems to be completely ignoring her eggs. They are scattered all over the tube, and she doesn't seem to interac...

Different Species In a Single Formicaium?

The title says it all.
Are there any certain species of ants that can share a single formicarium? I know most species would fight to the death and die, but i was hoping maybe that certain species wouldn't. BTW, this doesn't include slave makers.
