Re: How to move ants from one house to another

It will be a little bit before you hear back, not moving until sometime August. Just trying to get stuff planned out and sorted to help it go smoothly when it happens, I'll definitely try to remember to leave an update then though!

How to move ants from one house to another

Hey guys, I am moving soon and need to move my ants with me. I was hoping you guys had some tips for moving ants during a longish roadtrip and how to keep them alive and well! Obviously padding but is there a certain way to do it and is there anything else that needs to be done to make them roadtrip...

Re: Why are there no wasplike ants.

it’s also a lot less time consuming to fight on the ground without flying if they do get attacked. yeah you did mention speed. also yeah, it would be a lot less energy :D To the other dud, that's cuz there's hundreds of them, imagine if ants swarmed with hundreds of FLYING ants. It would be even cr...

Re: Why are there no wasplike ants.

If a bird then does try to pick them off the ground just imagine being swarmed by the rest of the living, angry and biting ants. Not very useful to have a stinger when a bird can just snatch you up in the sky in one go. Being on the ground allows them to be in large number without being spot to eas...

Re: Why are there no wasplike ants.

Well ants evolved from wasps. They evolved to live on the ground and loose their wings. If you think about it the main predators of insects are birds. Where do birds fly? In the sky. If you can imagine ants flying around in such large numbers just imagine how easy they would be for predators to spo...

Actually Ants evolved from ancestors of vespoid wasps during the Cretaceous period. So i would say they just a variation of evolution. Neither are superior to the other.
I wasn't trying to infer one was superior. I just think it would be cool to have flying ant workers! :D

Re: Why are there no wasplike ants.

Yeah, I guess the evolutionary pressure just wasn't high enough to be able to fly. I think its interesting though that they never did since through the alates they already had the ability and were just never selected to do so for the workers. I wonder if you could breed your own species that was onl...

Re: Why are there no wasplike ants.

Almost all species of ants can fly. The alates are borne with wings they get rid of them when they do not need them. That is just the way they evolved. Yeah I know but that's only for the alates which is a good way to spread out colonies but still very limited and doesn't help at all with foraging....
