Re: Nuptial Flight: West TN & surrounding areas

Ok, so im pretty sure Camponotus nearcticus had a flight yesterday/last night. I found 2 yesterday and 6 more last night. The only thing is I'm scared some may have not been mated yet as there were all within a 2 foot area next to a pine tree. Scattered but close. That was last night anyway. Also, ...

Leave her alone. Did she have nanitics?
No, she was just wandering across the sidewalk when I found her and she still has wings

Re: Nuptial Flight: West TN & surrounding areas

This is preferably for Batspiderfish or Martialis.... or anyone else that would know :-) The last 2 days here in West Tennessee we had a strong cold front. Highs were only in the low 60s high 50s with some rain and lows at night dipping down into the low 40s. Now that its warming back up how long d...

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings

I caught one camponotus in the morning last week but she was by herself, no big flight or anything. Haven't seen anything since then. Just had a large rain and now its in the high 70's and all I could find were workers today and I think one male but it kept flying away so I wasn't certain. I was tur...

A week with no activity?

I caught her a week ago and she hasn't gotten rid of her wings and every time I've checked her she's just sitting in the same spot moving her antennas. She did drink some honey when I first got her though but that's all. Is 73-75 F an ok temperature to keep her at?

Re: Queen Question

We know of no way to tell except after it is too late, when her brood develop into layabout males. Oh so they lay eggs even if they are infertile, they are just only males? If I get a male from the same species and put him in the test tube will it force them to mate? (haha I know that sounds weird ...

Queen Question

Is there a way to tell if the queen I caught is fertile? Like will she get rid of her wings soon or something if she is? Should I just keep looking for queens in-case she isn't? I found her wandering on a sidewalk by herself in the morning. She didn't try to fly away or anything so I assumed she was...

Re: Queen or Alate? And what Species?

Camponotus castaneus. You might want to offer her a small tray of sugary liquid, although after that, she won't need any food until her first workers. Alates are winged reproductive castes, which can be male or female. Since you have a queen with wings, she is both. After she pulls them out, she wi...

Queen or Alate? And what Species?

~ 15mm long Caught in Western Ky USA On sidewalk next to open area (grassy lawn basically) 9:15 a.m. My guess is Lasius Claviger based off this: http://www.antwiki.org/wiki/Lasius_claviger but I'm not certain because 15mm seems big for a lasius species. Just tell me if you need an addition picture h...
