Re: Jadeninja9's Camponotus hyatti Journal

Setup Update: I added a new test tube to their setup about two weeks ago. I did this because their current test tube setup that I bought them in had the cotton mold over and the water is light green. I thought they would move into it but they just cut off pieces of mold from the cotton and put it in...

Just because they take it doesn't mean it provides the correct nutrition for them. I would stick with honey :D

Re: $

You should add a small bag of sand-clay-mix or some other substrate to every nest. It's also good for species that spin cocoons as they sometimes have problems spinning their cocoons in glass, acrylic or printed nests - not to much of an issue for Lasius, Formica and Camponotus which just make nake...

Re: Starting a Myrmica colony

Myrmica rubra queens are semi-claustral so you're gonna need to have a small foraging area for them. Also, Myrmica rubra queens are extremely polygynous, so if you're absolutely sure that the queens you have are of the Myrmica rubra species, then you can put those two queens together and they should...

That's awesome! Did you find them in the bay, or were they from elsewhere.

Re: Jadeninja9's Camponotus hyatti Journal

Turns out somehow 2 of my workers escaped. I don't know how it happened. Hopefully it won't affect them much since one worker hatched. They're at 12 workers now.

Re: Jadeninja9's Camponotus hyatti Journal

Yeah, try that. It's cool how your ants survived a week with just one feeding :o . What types of ants do you see I'm the bay area? I live there too... But all I see is tetramorium and argentine ants. Sometimes I see camponotus, monomorium, Formica, and Lasius. I wouldn't know if I've seen anything ...

Re: Jadeninja9's Camponotus hyatti Journal

I think I'm one of the few people who are raising a thriving colony by leaving them completely alone for an entire week, just giving them all the food they can eat for a week a day before I leave. Before I started keeping ants I really didn't think this would work out. But I guess it is lol.

Re: Jadeninja9's Camponotus hyatti Journal

If you want your colony to move to the other tube, try moving the heating cable closer to the current one, while making the other one dark. Also add light to the old one, which will probably make them move out. By the way, your colony is amazing! :D Yeah, that's what I did while I left them for a w...
