Re: Strange Orange Ant?

That looks like a velvet ant/Cow killer ant. It's not an ant, but rather a wasp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutillidae I suspected that, but I thought the wasps were more hairy. I'm inclined to believe you as it doesn't really look like an ant, just strange it doesn't look like most velvet wasps ...

Strange Orange Ant?

My mother took this picture of a strange looking ant on our patio and sent it to me.

Sadly this is the only image we have of this ant.

It is low priority but I would appreciate it if you guys could identify this ant's species.

Re: Harvester Ants

Harvester ants usually don't take sugar unless they're really low on energy or water. They get their sugars from the seeds. Seeds also contain protein but an additional protein source is often required. Ok, got it. A little bit of sugar, seeds, and some protein. I don't actually have an ant colony ...

Yes you can do that. Bake the soil (and let it cool down) before you put it in to kill mites and parasites.
Does it have any benefits for the ants though?

Harvester Ants

Hey!

So I was wondering how you fit seeds into a Harvester Ants diet? Does it replace something or do you just fit it in with the usual sugar and protein?

Dirt in a formicarium?

Hello!

So I was wondering if any of you put dirt in your formicarium's? Not like a traditional ant farm where they dig it out and make there own nests, but like a thin layer of dirt on the floor. If so do you think it helps the ants in anyway? Or is it just for looks?

Re: Need help asap!

Alright so I recently found 3 winged queens and 13 male drones but they were all only around 15 feet from the nest and I doubt they are mated. I put them all in a tub together, but haven't seen any mating. Will they successfully mate even if they are the same colony? I know it varies from species t...
