If you don't mind me asking, what country/state are you in?
I reside in Kentucky
Probably 3-4 months at around 40 F.
Do you know what month to start around? I'm also going to be putting them in a makeup cooler so it only gets down to 50F which I don't think should be problem.

Re: Weird idea to keep ants warm.

The heat retention of water is relatively low compared to something like iron. So it wouldn't stay warm too long. If you want to add insulators, you can add some fiberglass in there to help maintain the length of sustained heat so you're not changing the water every hour after it cooled down.

I am a little bit surprised at how often you are feeding them, they should be fine to leave them for a month, most species of ant don’t eat until they have like 25 workers ish in the wild.

You could give them a little larger amount than you usually do. Just help them keep going.

Re: Question about eggs

Maybe they keep eating them due to stress. I'd say keep feeding them and wait, hope everything will be good. Interestingly enough, one of my carpenter ant queens actually killed her eggs because she placed them next to the cotton stopper (not the water stopper) in the test tube and the eggs dried o...

Re: Carpenter advice

It might be because she's waiting until after hibernation. Is she missing her wings? If so, she is probably fertile and just waiting until the spring to lay eggs. Around this time, ants are going to start going into hibernation/diapause and if you catch her this late, she won't have enough time to r...

I didn't see anyone post this topic so I wanted to ask this. Does A Fulva need hibernation and if so, when do they usually hibernate and what is the optimal temperature?

It changes every year and it’s hard to tell, there is no perfect temperature or humidity.

They tend to fly around dusk or dawn.

If you want to you can keep a record of all of your experiences that can help you to learn about your area. (What I do.)

Good Luck!
Got it. Thanks!

Re: Camponotus Castaneus Catching Tips

I'm aware of the basic catching tips and the time off when the species flies. However, I was hoping to get more specified details such as what temperatures they like to fly at or hours or weather conditions. I've actually watched that video before. I don't believe he mentioned any of those specific ...

Camponotus Castaneus Catching Tips

I know it's too late currently to catch Castaneus but I'd like some tips on how to catch them for next year. I reside in Kentucky if that changes any of these tips. What month(s) and time of day do they typically fly? What temperatures and what conditions such as directly after a light rain, or duri...
