The pictures arent very clear but if they have spines, they are a species of polyrachis. If its okay what is your uni assignment about, I'm doing a bachelor of science but there arent any courses that would focus on insects and I'm interested to know what they would be like?

If it removes its wings could you take another picture it may be brachyponera lutea, several people I know have been catching this species lately an also not many large camponotus species have flown yet?

Depends on the species but I know for a fact that C. nigriceps and C. consobrinus fly at the end of December in the late afternoon. C. humilior also flies sometime in January I believe.

Probably both as most ants will fly after it has rained mostly due to the ground being easier to dig their nests from what i've heard and seen. Lots of Iridomyrmex purpereus colonies were getting ready to fly here but the wind was too strong.

Those are Camponotus but they arent consobrinus sorry to say, nice queens though mate

It actually hasnt rained here at all for at least 2 weeks but they just started flying, crematogaster are also flying btw
