Is this crematogaster?

I was working on a wood project the other day when this sweet thing came to visit me. I've heard crematogaster have heart shaped gasters. This looks pretty heart shaped. This is the only clear picture I have though. I didn't have a ruler but against my pinkie (if assumed to be 1cm wide) she was abou...

Okinawa Myrmicine alate

So a few weeks ago I found a single alate out in the middle of a field. I've kept her, and finally gotten around to processing the photos I was able to get of her. Opening the test tube in order to get clearer photos was so nerve wracking. She kept trying to fly! I usually ended up placing a finger ...

Re: What is a good camera?

You really don't need to spend a ton of money on a camera to get great macro footage. My favorite method is through lens coupling, where you use something like a coupling ring ($15) to reverse an additional lens over the lens on your camera. Shutter speed is not much of a factor for me. Lighting is...

What is a good camera?

I've decided my phone is insufficient for the pictures I want to have. I have gotten a few clear photos of Ants that sit still, but getting Ants to sit still is not easy or reliable.

I have decided to look for a macro lens setup, and hopefully one with a high shutter speed.

Any suggestions?

Re: I accidentally adopted an ant

How do you know if it's unfertilized or not? Wings do not necessarily mean that the queen is unfertilized. Some queens' wings fall off eventually before the workers come, or keep them until the workers arrive then the workers will rip them off. So, yeah she could still be fertilized. Keep her in th...

I accidentally adopted an ant

So I was at this barbecue the other day, and in the midst of biting into a nice juicy piece of chicken, I spotted something my eyes have been scanning for constantly for the past few months: an ant alate. But just one, and clearly struggling to keep her wings closed in the wind. Being the scientist ...

First two queens, dead after 15 weeks.

Well it looks like that's all she wrote. I found both Ashley and Brittany dead today. Their water is almost all gone, so I wonder if I should have checked on it sooner. I was about to move them. http://i.imgur.com/JBtnRuw.jpg Also I'm an idiot. I've been looking at them under a red light only, so I ...

Awesome! Congrats on the new brood! Isn't such a great feeling? #antkeepingjoys
It is. I just want them to hatch right now, but I have to be patient.

Re: Okinawa Pheidole

I was away last week, but I'm supposed to bother the queens as little as possible at this stage so that's only a good thing. It has now been 14 weeks since I caught Ashley and Brittany, and 2 weeks since Ashley laid eggs. http://i.imgur.com/AZ7lGk6.jpg Here's Ashley on the left with her eggs, and Br...
