Re: What do you feed your ants in general

I feed my Solenopsis colony 10 crickets a day (protein), I give them 1 KitKat a week (sugars) and they go thru a water tube every two weeks (of course my soil nest has a bottom layer of substrate that is watered once a week so they get moisture from there also.

Re: Update on my Solenopsis Invicta Soil Nest

Another feeding time with my Solenopsis colony. Gave them some crickets to attack and eat. They had all 6 crickets subdued in less than 5 minutes and started in on eating them. The colony is really starting to take off in size, think I need to get serious about building them additional living space....

Re: Update on my Solenopsis Invicta Soil Nest

They will eat all the soft innards out of every piece of the cricket. I have seen them toting the head of the cricket into the nest at times. All that is usually left is the exoskeleton that I end up cleaning out of the outworld.

Re: Dirt Setup

When you build the nest place a bottom layer of Perlite and maybe a small tube into it and then place your soil on top of it. Perlite is a rock that holds moisture and slowly dehydrates it into the soil, it can be found at most hardware stores in the garden section (just make sure it's plain not tre...
