Re: Lasius niger queen small gaster

She might just have less reserves, maybe she travelled further or had a hard time finding a nesting spot. You could give her a very small drop of sugar water (on a piece of tinfoil or a Q-tip) although if she is raising her first workers fine that can also wait until she has her first workers to not...

Re: The AntsCanada Global Ant Nursery Project™

Mikey has actually responded to the RIFA/GAN being chaotic in general issue. No idea why there isn't an announcement on the forum yet, maybe they need some time to prepare a good one. This is awesome and the best possible reaction. I'm curious what the upcoming changes will be, hopefully they will m...

Re: Queen ant and noise

As far as I know only Messor harvester ants are really sensitive to vibrations and loud noise. Unless you turn on your music to a level where the windows start shattering it should not be an issue for most ants.

Re: What are these brown ovals?

Ant larvae pupate to become proper ant workers. Some of them spin cocoons like butterflies do.

Re: death after death

That's pretty much it. Put them into a test tube and (unless they're semi-claustral queens like Myrmica) put them into a dark, (not too) warm place. Then forget about them for 4 weeks (make that 8 weeks for Camponotus). Fully claustral queens do best when they're just completely left alone and not d...

Re: Semi chlusteral queen, feeding!?!

Fruit flies and small spiders are perfect as they have soft skin. If you feed mealworms or beetles I'd cut them in half.

Re: What are these brown ovals?

Note though that some ants have yellow eggs/pupae or brown pupae by default.

Probably they're pupae.

Re: Temperature Question...

22-26°C should be fine. Anything above 28°C is not so good unless your ants are from a really hot environment (Solenopsis invicta thrives at 30°C but then they are a tropical species).

Re: Workers not foraging too far

It is completely normal for workers of small ant colonies to not wander off far away from their nest. Also while they do not have any larvae they barely need any protein and the amount of sugars they drink are so tiny that you most likely cannot see it at all. it's very likely that they mostly come ...
