Re: Need help with Ponera queen

Ponera are semi-claustral. You might want to leave a tiny drop of sugary liquid on the cotton to give her a little energy and resume feeding her small, soft-bodied insects after she comes out of hibernation.

Re: What species should I look out for in the Netherlands

Here's a useful site antmaps.org ;) I never use antmaps because it is incomplete and often incorrect. people false identify ants ant it is not an exhaustive list by all means. Your workers are not dying of old age. Do they have foraging space? Also, this thread has appeared almost six times -- if you need to add information, add it to a single thread instead of starting a new one.

Re: Ants wont go to hibernation

A lot of people think that ants hibernate like mammals, in a sleep-like state. Hibernation to ants only means a lower metabolic rate assisted by low temperatures (they are ectotherms). They may or may not show any visible signs of hibernating.

Re: wood ants won't eat

Formica rufa is not found in North America -- I would try to get the ants ID'd. Regardless, the ants should have been in hibernation a while ago, and that is probably why they are not eating.

Re: Emergency!

Ants get most, if not all of their water needs from humidity. They do not need to drink. I don't know what kind of mold you are dealing with, but if it is just something that is discoloring the cotton, then there's probably nothing to worry about.

Re: Emergency!

All the ants need is humidity, so attaching two tubes and leaving the means to breathe will work fine.
