Re: URGENT:PARASETIC QUEEN ANT

Not a social parasite. Looks like Tetramorium bicarinatum, but we would need better pictures and an actual measurement to do a proper ID.

Pheidole sp.

Could be Ph. megacephala, but we're a little limited on well-lit detailed photos.

People talk about having trouble with baby powder/alcohol, but it keeps every species of ant that I have in.

Re: humidity question

Humidity is how ants get most of their water. Condensation occurs when warmer humid air condenses on a cool surface, and small animals can drown in it. If you get rid of the heater and/or allow the moist air to escape, the condensation will probably go away.

Re: camponotus and ?

Yup! That's Crematogaster sp.

The only reliable way to distinguish from the two possibilities, C. cerasi and C. lineolata, depends on the hair length on the pronotum (the front-top of the thorax).

Re: Camponotus queen dead or hibernating?

Looks dead, sorry. On top of a lot of things going wrong with hibernation (she should have been in the cold a while ago) temperate fall-flying Camponotus have a low rate of survival because of lower nutrient reserves and because they also have trouble finding mates. Queens do not die from being unfe...

Re: Proper sugar source?

Sugar water tubes are only practical for very large colonies. Water gives sugar the capacity to spoil. They should be fed drops of sugary liquid which are replaced whenever they are consumed or dry out. My Camponotus pennsylvanicus are fed every couple of days, and their growing colony is thriving -...

Re: Proper sugar source?

Once they have workers, a colony should not be confined to a test tube. They need foraging areas where they can search for food as the need arises.
