Re: What species of Myrmica

Myrmica cannot be identified to the species without use of a microscope. Myrmica rubra is one exception, but we would need to see the lobes on the front of the head, near the antennal sockets.

Re: Identifying Workers for Lasius Umbratus Queen

Feed her sugar water every once in a while, and she should be fine.

Re: Identifying Workers for Lasius Umbratus Queen

You'll be looking for something smaller than these Formica and Camponotus workers.

Re: Proper protein?

Adult ants need fresh insects full of hemolymph because they cannot ingest solid protein sources (although larvae can.)

Re: Formica workers that grow with colony size?

Colony age, not worker age*

Arthropods with adult forms like insects stop growing larger after they hit their adult stage (ants at least have stretchy gasters.)

Re: Queen Identification

That's a common layman's reaction to black and red Formica, but the fusca group is not just made up of black ants. The proportions (large gaster, modestly sized head) point to her being a claustral species.
