Question about Formica
I have a Formica colony that was in a test tube setup and doing very well. She had 10 workers, several eggs, and a few enclosing. I decided to connect the outworld the test tube was in to an AntsCanada Hybrid Nest with the idea that in the near future I would move the colony there. Well, to my surpr...

Ant Keeping Definitely Requires Patience!!
Just had to announce that my Formica sp. 'colony' has its first nanitic! I captured the Queen Aug. 1, 2015, she laid eggs April 6, and now, May 7, nanitics! It's taken 9 months from capture to this point!!! It has certainly required major patience. My two Lasius sp. Queens laid eggs last fall but no...

Re: May have killed all my Queens?
I hibernate my ants outside in ice cream boxes and it's been working alright for now. Just be sure to keep them in the shade and watch out for temperatures below freezing. The problem is my patio is south facing and when it's sunny all day.... The bar fridge is working perfectly. Keeping them at a ...

Re: May have killed all my Queens?
Thanks for the tips/advice. Lesson learned!! I had a total of 10 Queens, 2 Formica sp. and 8 Lasius sp. Luckily, 1 Formica and 2 Lasius survived. Interestingly, only 2 of my Lasius queens had eggs/larvae/pupae and lo and behold, those are the two that survived. Coincidence? ;) Bought a bar fridge to...

May have killed all my Queens?
I hibernated my ants by putting them in a toolbox out on my patio (I live in a condo and don't have a garage!). It is getting down to about 8-10C at night and 16-18C during the day. My patio is south facing and I didn't think but it got really hot in the toolbox. It looks like the glass even expande...

Re: formica delay
One of them as a matter of fact did not even lay a single egg until 8 months after I caught her- she was at the point where I needed to feed her like a semi-clausteral queen because she burned all her fat reserves from just sitting around for 8 months at the point she got a worker. Formica, like Ca...

Re: Confirmation on this Ant Species
Finally got my extension tube for my DSLR. These were taken with a 60mm Macro Lens + 25mm extension tube to get an idea of how small they were. You really get to see the hairs on these: http://i57.tinypic.com/6fp341.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/14tlmae.jpg I caught two of these ladies. Both are defini...
