Do queens shed wings even without being fertile? The wings could be removed by outside force, right?

She did not have wings, however i caught 2 other non-winged queens in the same bucket. She's the only one that started laying eggs in the test tube setup. One died in...

Re: Solenopsis Eggs

Hello, I'm a new antkeeper and I'm located in central Florida. I've captured a Queen Solenopsis (Fire ant), not exactly sure what type of Solenopsis but I'm sure it is a red fire ant specie. I captured her from an existing mound in my backyard and I have her in a test tube setup. I noticed she has ...

Re: need help indentifying this queen ant

It's a queen for sure, tho it still does have its wings on so it might not be fertile. And it does look like a tropical fire ant queen to me. Wings on or off doesn't always indicate where she's fertile or not. Not all fertile queens shed wings right away. I have Solenopsis Invicta (RIFA) that have ...

I would suggest leaving the queen in a dark place until there's around 15-20 workers. Ants prefer sweet stuff and protein like honey water, sugar water, fruit, pieces of meat or crushed insects.
