Dani (Lacius) - Week 42

I haven't given an update on Dani for quite a while. Week 21, I think. This has been for a couple reasons. One, she was caring for a brood all winter, so I didn't want to disturb her with pictures. Two, not much was really happening. Today, however, a major event has happened for Dani. Her first wor...

Re: Bean Family Ant Journal

Hey Will, Thanks for the feedback. I have two of these Formica colonies relatively the same size and age: Beatrice and Cindy. I don't know if they are F. fusca for sure because I haven't become knowledgeable enough about identifying ants, but I will do some additional checking now that you have give...

Beatrice (Formica) - Week 46

So much has been happening around our house, I can hardly keep up. Beatrice has been producing like crazy. Today marks another milestone in that the first of her new brood has emerged. Her original nanitics are starting to die off--four of the original six are gone. So with this new addition, she ha...

Camponotus Flying Near Our House

After my son's t-ball game, I spotted a winged ant as I climbed out of the pickup in our driveway. Looking closer I could see it was a queen camponotus sp. I grabbed my collection container--I always have one in my vehicle now--but it flew off just before I reached it. I watched it until it disappea...

Cindy (Formica) - Week 42

Just one pic of Cindy this week. The acrylic I used to cover her formicarium is terrible for getting any kind of decent picture. Cindy has been busy. One of her nanitics appears to be caring a bundle of 3 eggs. https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=A780F7E4BE06F3FE!407726&authkey=!AK2I09BDOEiqbJY...

Beatrice (Formica) - Week 42

Thank you for sending your sympathies regarding Emily. Here is an update on Beatrice. She has been very busy. Her nanitics are carrying around two bundles of eggs and larva. I was unable to get very good pictures before they hid them away, sorry. The ants keep the larva and eggs outside the center c...

Emily (Lacius) - Week 33

Sad day. I moved Emily from the basement to the upstairs last week. This week I found she had died. The winter must have been harder on her than expected.

Cindy (Formica) - Week 39

After new discoveries the last couple weeks, I had my hopes up for this week. Unfortunately, the weather turned colder here, and all my ants seemed to have hit the snooze button on their winter hibernation alarm clocks. Here is a look at Cindy's family. https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=A780F...

Beatrice (Formica) - Week 39

Amazing news this week. Look closely at the pictures, especially the second, and you will see a brand new spring larva. I could tell you where to look exactly, but I challenge you to an "I spy!" Congrats Beatrice! I guess spring has officially come to north Idaho. https://onedrive.live.com/download?...

Emily (Lacius) - Week 29

New developments with Emily this week. She's now caring for a single pupa. Finding that Emily had a pupa was a complete surprise to me. When I looked in on her last week, I didn't see any evidence of eggs or larva; she must have hidden it from sight. https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=A780F7E4...
